Sea Safety

Sea Safety Image: Passenger LinerThe Forum, through the sea safety advisory group, aims to provide advice to those people who are at risk on or in the sea. Other than in harbours and docks the sea is an extensive and unregulated environment. Therefore to achieve an improvement in safety and a reduction in casualties in an unregulated environment, the focus will be on trying to change the attitude and behaviour of those using the sea, by improving knowledge and training, through education and awareness initiatives.

People get into difficulties at sea for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Lack of education, training and/or knowledge
  • Failure to take responsibility for actions
  • Not being prepared for the conditions (water and/or weather) and underestimating the hazards present
  • Not preparing the vessel properly
  • Conflict of use between different users

There should be an interface between the areas of beach safety and sea safety as clearly some beach users launch craft from the beach and use the sea. This is an area where the Forum can try and effect some improvement.
